The Unofficial Science of Die Hard review :-
Comics Go Extreme: Paul Chowdhry and Chris Ramsey Push Limits in ‘The Unofficial Science of Die Hard’ – From Building Leaps to Lift Explosions, Can Die Hard’s Stunts Really Happen? Viral Breakdown Inside!”
Get ready for the wackiest Christmas programming of 2023! Join deadpan comedian Paul Chowdhry and his less deadpan sidekick, Chris Ramsey, as they dive into ‘The Unofficial Science of Die Hard.’ Their mission? Recreate John McClane’s legendary stunts without, you know, actually dying. Picture MythBusters meets Taskmaster, perfect for kids and those enjoying a light holiday libation.
First on the crazy agenda? A reenactment of McClane’s iconic leap off Nakatomi tower, armed with just a firehose and a gun. Will they defy gravity or become holiday casualties? Find out in this laugh-out-loud, action-packed Christmas special. Cheers to a festive season filled with wild antics!”
Engineer Zoe Laughlin takes the stage to unveil the repercussions of applying non-Hollywood physics to such a stunt. As it turns out, wrapping a hose around the faux waist of a humanoid filled with gelatinous blood and guts and dropping it 10 meters results in a staggering 78 kilonewtons of force, causing the entity to be cleaved into three substantial pieces. If it had a head, the whiplash effect would have been so intense that decapitation would be the grand finale. Yet, amidst the scientific dissection, Paul Chowdhry poses a greater query – why would Nakatomi Corporation host its Christmas party on Christmas Eve? According to him, December 20th would be more fitting. While Laughlin explains how harness gears could mitigate the descent, she concurs with a busy nod.
A solitary droplet of nitroglycerin, an anvil, and half a kilo of explosives in a shed serve as props to illustrate the probable outcome of the numerous C4 blocks tethered to an office chair and sent down an elevator shaft by our hero in the later part of the film. Chowdhry bids farewell to the resulting shards and splinters with a solemn, “You’ve been a good shed, a loyal shed. I hope you find comfort in the Homebase in the sky.” Picking a sizable shard from a protective screen, Ramsey marvels, “It would have gone straight through my face.” It’s inexplicable, but it all carries a distinct Christmas charm.
Fake feet, ballistic gel coursing with tubes of blood, provide the solution to an extraordinary thief’s command to shoot out glass partitions around bare feet (surprisingly effective makeshift shoes crafted from a few sheets of office paper). The pièce de résistance unfolds as Laughlin’s humanoid bag takes a 100m-high plunge from a crane, emulating Hans Gruber’s fatal fall. This time, the blood is not jellified, resulting in a spectacular splatter.
Amidst this chaotic revelry, which feels like a blend of learning and unlearning, Alex Brooker conducts interviews with actors from the film and stunt coordinator Charlie Picerni. Picerni recounts informing Alan Rickman that Gruber would fall after a count of “Three, two, one, go!” but slyly arranged for a beat earlier release, capturing genuine terror on Rickman’s face. In the spirit of the season, neither of the presenters meets a grim fate during the stunt re-enactments. Like the engaging dynamics of MythBusters and Taskmaster, they exude genuine enjoyment throughout, a rarity for any season.
As the ultimate question persists – is Die Hard truly a Christmas movie? Chowdhry disputes, Ramsey affirms. Director John McTiernan leans towards agreement, while Bruce Willis dissents. Yet, inescapably, Die Hard fits the festive bill. Who, amid the holiday festivities, doesn’t fantasize about blowing it all sky high, walking away unscathed, silhouetted against the flames? Yippee ki yay, everyone
